Home Ed Fomo!!! It’s definitely a thing. Last night I ended up staying awake until 1am spending money I didn’t plan to spend buying books, games and resources for a project that I didn’t plan to do ………… why? Because everyone else was doing it and I didn’t want to miss out!
Fomo if you have never heard of the expression means fear of missing out! 20 somethings use the word across their social media platforms when talking about not being seen in the latest trendy restaurant or having a photo taken outside a floral cupcake shop. A 30 something mum of four has no business using the word – however I’ve recently realised that homeschool Fomo is definitely a thing, and I’m almost positive that if you are reading this as a home educating parent you would have experienced it too.
I had my January planned out, we were going to do a Harry Potter unit study. Up until this week I have been spending my evenings printing and binding it all and planning all the cute but educational activities I wanted to do with the children. Then a few days ago on the Twinkl home ed Facebook group everyone started preparing for a rainforest adventure study. There were photos of display boards, sensory tables for pre schoolers, beautifully bound workbooks – all the things making regular home educating living rooms look like they have jumped straight out of a Pinterest board.
I began to get itchy fingers. I was / still am happy with my choice of topic for this month, but EVERYONE else was studying the rainforest, EVERYONE was talking about rainforest resources, EVERYONE was sharing rainforest images. I wanted to join in, I didn’t want to miss out, I didn’t want my children to miss out.
Fast forward 3 days and £80ish later and I am now the proud owner of multiple rainforest books, puzzles and a science kit. My Twinkl saved items are full of rainforest resources to print, and of course I have my very own rainforest Pinterest board. Fomo got me, and on Monday we will begin an adventure through the rainforest. I have not worked out all the details yet, I still very much want to carry on with our Harry Potter plans along with our regular studies – how we will fit it in? I’m not sure yet, but I’m definitely going to give it a go.

Thanks for your blog, nice to read. Do not stop.
